What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
Last reviewed: · Strategic AI Architects Data Desk · reviewed by Mike Moore
SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of getting a website ranked as a link on a search results page; AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of getting that website read, quoted, and cited as a source inside an AI-generated answer — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, or an AI assistant acting for the user. Same site, different destination: SEO wins a position, AEO wins a citation.
The qualifier is that these are not competing disciplines, and anyone selling AEO as a replacement for SEO is selling against Google's own documentation. Google's "AI features and your website" guidance states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode," that "the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features," and that a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be shown as a supporting link (Google Search Central, verified live 2026-08-18). AEO is a layer on top of working SEO, not a substitute for it.
What actually differs
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | A ranked results page of links | A generated answer that names its sources |
| Unit of success | Position for a query; the click | Being selected and cited; the mention or referral |
| What gets optimized | Pages for keywords and intent | Passages for questions — the answer in the first sentence, sources named and dated |
| Crawlers involved | Googlebot, Bingbot | Those two plus OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, and user-triggered fetchers |
| Measurement | Rank tracking, Search Console | Citation sampling across engines; AI-source referral traffic |
| Machine layer | Sitemap, meta tags, schema helps | Schema, llms.txt, and increasingly agent-callable tools (WebMCP) |
In practice, the overlap is the point. The page that ranks and the page that gets cited share a spine — crawlable, fast, structured, from an identifiable author — and then AEO adds the parts a language model needs to quote you safely: a complete answer in the first sentence, a visible review date, numbers tied to named sources, and the structural signals an AEO audit scores. Our own research shows how far the industry is from either bar: when we ran PageSpeed on 1,080 insurance agency websites, the median mobile score was 61 — most agency sites are still losing at the SEO layer before AEO is even in play.
The honest one-line summary: SEO makes you findable by a search engine; AEO makes you quotable by an answer engine. In 2026 you need both, in that order — and how the engines pick their citations is its own question.
What the work looks like in practice depends on what you sell, because the question types differ by line of business: AEO for Medicare and health agencies (where the citable pages are also the pages that collect health information), AEO for life insurance agencies (coverage amount, underwriting, beneficiary questions), and AEO for commercial insurance agencies (coverage forms and class of business).

Related questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No — it sits on top of it. Google's AI-features documentation states a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page that fails at SEO never reaches the AI answer layer. AEO is the additional work that makes an already-indexable page easy to quote: answer-first structure, visible dates, named sources, and machine-readable schema.
Is AEO the same thing as GEO?
Functionally, yes. The industry uses AEO (answer engine optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization), and sometimes LLMO interchangeably for the same discipline: getting content selected and cited inside AI-generated answers. The label varies by who is selling it; the underlying work — retrievability, quotable structure, source credibility — does not.
Can you measure AEO the way you measure SEO rankings?
Not with the same precision. SEO has a stable measurement: your position for a query, tracked daily. AI answers are generated per-conversation and personalized, so AEO is measured by sampling — asking the engines real customer questions and recording whether and how your site is cited — plus watching referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and Google's AI surfaces in analytics.
